Trespa® Meteon® Modernizes 1920s Chicago High School

©DLA Architects, Ltd./Alexander Romanovsky

Constructed in 1926, West Chicago High School has seen many renovations over the years. Specialising in Pre-K and K-12 education, DLA Architects developed a plan for future expansion over 20 years ago during the building’s last renovation and saw it through in 2020. The team was tasked to create more flexible space for the school to better align with its current and future needs, all while preserving the historical architecture of the building.

The team sought an exterior product with proven durability and a clean aesthetic. Having worked with Trespa® brand products before, DLA Architects knew it would hold up to extensive wear and tear, which was critical for the high school. As part of the redesign project, a second floor addition, including a new Media Center, was added to the school. Justin Rios, Project Designer with DLA Architects, said, “The Media Center was our conduit to introduce a modern element into the design.” Trespa® Meteon® panels in NA14 Weathered Basalt paired with glass to update the appearance of this historic building.

Through the use of a rainscreen attachment system, the installation of the panels was relatively seamless. Now installed, the school district is pleased with the latest renovation. “They love the modern and clean look of Trespa® Meteon® on the exterior of the building,” Justin shared. To the school district, Trespa® Meteon® panels felt like a natural addition to the building while also meeting the design objective of DLA Architects to create a modern visual break within a traditional façade.
